County Times: Powys protest goes to Somerset

A KNIGHTON woman led a group of protesters from across Wales to Somerset to fight EDF Energy’s plans to build two new nuclear reactors next to the existing nuclear site.

Angie Zelter, a resident of Knighton and Knighton Peace and Justice member, helped organise the blockade on Saturday, October 1, to the EDF regional HQ in Bridgwater, and at the Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station in Somerset on Monday, October 3.

Angie said: “It is time for a Welsh Spring. The corruption, lies, and dangers associated with nuclear power station must be protested. We have wind, solar, wave and tidal power, which can provide for our energy needs without the risk of horrendous accidents, military attack and the production of lethal wastes that have to be guarded for thousands of years.

“The risks inherent in nuclear power would not be acceptable under any health and safety regimes; insurance companies are not prepared to cover nuclear power plants against accidents and many of the massive costs of compensation - and decommissioning - are underwritten by the taxpayer.

“Our Welsh Government is unable to block the building of such large electricity generation projects in Wales and yet we are to be burdened with a new reactor at Wylfa.

"Wales is surrounded by Hinkley Point, Oldbury and Heysham nuclear power plants as well as the reprocessing plant at Sellafield - and radioactive contamination knows no boundaries.”

CND Cymru, along with the Wales Anti Nuclear Alliance (WANA), Friends of the Earth Cymru, Pobl Atal Wylfa B (PAWB) and other groups in Wales have long campaigned against nuclear power.

Hinkley Point is just a few miles across the Bristol Channel from Wales, and as the first of eight new nuclear power stations to be built in Britain holds particular significance to those opposed to nuclear power.

The protest and blockade will warn the government and EDF that nuclear power protesters are not prepared to stand by and allow what they call untried and untested, reactors to be built.
