Western Morning News: 'No new nuclear' protest outside Hinkley Point

An attempted blockade of Hinkley Point nuclear power station is due to begin today as campaigners against a proposed replacement nuclear plant step up their protest.

Stop New Nuclear, a group of organisations wants to halt the plan for the new twin reactor Hinkley C, and site clearance work, which has already started at the Somerset site. Developer EDF Energy has yet to apply for planning permission for the new station itself.

Mike Harrison, Hinkley B station director, said:"We respect the right to peaceful protest, but are also mindful of the disruption such events can cause our neighbours with whom we have strong links."

A march and rally took place outside EDF's offices in Bridgwater on Saturday.

"This region deserves decent jobs that are safe and sustainable," said Crispin Aubrey from campaign group, Stop Hinkley.
